Windsurf Is Gone. It's Devin Desktop Now.

If you had Windsurf open in a tab this month, you may have noticed something missing: Cascade, the agent that was Windsurf's whole reason for existing, is gone. Cognition pulled it on September 8, 2026, and what's left has been rebranded Devin Desktop - a name that tells you exactly where the product's future actually lives now.

The bigger story: consolidation, not competition

This didn't happen in isolation. Three weeks earlier, on August 14, SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor and installed Grok 4.6 as Cursor's first-party model - a genuinely unusual move for a rocket company, and a sign of how much strategic weight AI coding tools now carry outside of traditional software companies. Cursor followed up on September 10 with Projects, a coordinator-agent feature that plans work and delegates pieces of it to sub-agents rather than handling a task end-to-end itself.

Put together, the last month has been less "new coding assistant launches" and more "the coding assistant market consolidates around a smaller number of owners with deeper pockets." Windsurf didn't lose to a better product - it got absorbed by one that already had the same acquirer's confidence behind it.

Where that leaves the leaderboard

On the current Terminal-Bench 4.0 leaderboard - the benchmark most directly relevant to real coding-agent work, not general reasoning - Claude Code and Codex are effectively tied for first place (GPT-6 Astra inside Codex scores 58.2%, Claude Fable 5.1 inside Claude Code scores 57.9%). Cursor has risen to #3 since the SpaceX acquisition, and Devin is #4 after absorbing Windsurf's former base.

What to actually do if you were a Windsurf user

• Your existing Windsurf install now points to Devin Desktop - there's no separate migration step, but the underlying agent behavior has changed, not just the branding.
• If Cascade's specific behavior was why you picked Windsurf, test Devin Desktop against your actual workflow before assuming it's a drop-in replacement.
• Pricing has moved with the rebrand too - Windsurf now sells through Devin's plans rather than its own, worth checking directly if cost was a factor in your original choice.
