Fireflies Adds Free, Unlimited Dictation to Every Plan. What Fireflies Talk Does and What the Announcement Doesn't Say

The meeting notetaker is moving into voice typing on Mac and Windows, bundling what standalone apps charge for. The privacy claims are specific; the accuracy claims aren't there at all.

TL;DR

Fireflies.ai launched Fireflies Talk on September 29, 2026: voice dictation built into its Mac and Windows desktop apps that types clean text wherever your cursor is. You hold a key (Fn on Mac, Ctrl + Win on Windows), speak, and release. Unlimited dictation is included on every Fireflies plan, including free, in 90+ languages. Fireflies says dictations are stored on your device, that it keeps no copy, and that they are never used to train models. Mobile is coming; the announcement gives no accuracy or latency figures.

Fireflies became known for joining your meetings and writing the notes. Fireflies Talk moves the same company into the rest of your day: instead of typing an email, a Slack reply, or a CRM note, you hold a key and say it.

What it does

  • Speak instead of type: dictation works in email, Slack, documents, AI prompts, CRM fields, and other text fields, per Fireflies.
  • How to use it: hold Fn on Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows, speak, release, and clean text appears at the cursor.
  • Cleans up as you go: removes filler words and false starts, with no voice commands to learn.
  • Formats for the destination: an email comes out like an email, a Slack reply like a Slack reply, and naming a teammate or group in Slack becomes an @mention.
  • Languages: 90+.
  • Availability: Mac and Windows today, mobile "coming soon".

Price and privacy

ItemWhat Fireflies says
CostUnlimited dictation on every plan, including the free plan. Fireflies says standalone dictation apps typically charge $12 to $15 a month for unlimited use.
Where dictations liveStored on the user's device. Fireflies doesn't keep a copy, and no one at Fireflies or in the user's workspace can see them.
TrainingDictations, like meeting notes, are never used to train models.
ComplianceSOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant.
From Fireflies' September 29 press release unless noted.

TechCrunch reports the same on-device storage claim and lists Wispr Flow, Willow, and Superwhisper as the dictation apps Talk competes with. It also notes the different strategies: Fireflies is bundling dictation into its existing plans, while Wispr went the other way and released a meeting notetaker for free for its dictation users.

What the announcement doesn't say

  • Accuracy and speed. No word-error rate, latency, or comparison with Wispr Flow or other dictation apps is given. CEO Krish Ramineni's line to TechCrunch, that people speak roughly three times faster than they type, is a general claim about speech, not a test of this product.
  • Where the speech is processed. The release says dictations are stored on the device and not copied, but it doesn't say whether audio is processed on the device or sent to Fireflies' servers for transcription.
  • Limits on the free plan. "Unlimited" is stated for every plan; the release doesn't mention any other restrictions.
  • Scale claims. Fireflies says it is used by 20 million people across 1 million organizations, including 75% of the Fortune 500; these are company figures.

What this means if you dictate at work

If you already use Fireflies for meetings, Talk costs nothing extra to try, so the real test is whether it beats the dictation you use now on your own voice and your own apps: jargon, names, and formatting in email and Slack. If privacy decides it for you, ask Fireflies where the audio is processed, since on-device storage and on-device processing are different promises. If you need dictation on a phone, wait for mobile.
